Río Partido sits in the mountains near Salcedo, in the northern Dominican Republic — far from the beach resorts, which is exactly the point. Here is how travelers actually get there.
From Santo Domingo (most common)
About 3.5 hours / 181 km by road. Nearly all visitors do this as a guided day tour with pickup included — tours leave Santo Domingo around 5–6 AM from the Distrito Nacional or Colonial Zone, include breakfast and lunch, and return around 7–8 PM. This is the easiest option and the one we recommend for first-timers.
From Puerto Plata (closest)
About 1 hour / 60 km. If you are already based on the north coast, Río Partido makes a very doable day trip — drive yourself or arrange a local transfer to the trailhead near Salcedo or Villa Trina.
From Punta Cana (long haul)
About 5 hours / 379 km each way. Too far for a day trip; only makes sense folded into a multi-day north-coast itinerary.
Do you need a guide?
Strongly recommended. The trail is unmarked in places, the river crossings are easier with someone who knows them, and local guides handle logistics like parking and the community lunch. Independent hiking is possible but not advised unless you know the area.
